Dog Potty Training – Easy Tips To Potty Train Your Dog Quickly

Dog potty training isn’t such a difficult thing to do as many imagine it to be. Sure it requires some persistence and dedication however by having the correct information you’ll understand how to potty train your dog in no time.

The very best time which you should commence dog potty training is when your dog is still a puppy. Puppies brains are like sponges and will absorb anything that you teach them. As dogs grow older, it gets a bit harder to train them however it is still very doable. While dog potty training is in progress, accidents will be unavoidable. Once in a while your dog will poop or pee somewhere inside the house particularly if it is a puppy. As a responsible dog owner you need to clean up the mess and just proceed with toilet training your dog knowing that in a matter of time your dog will be correctly potty trained and these accidents will be a thing of the past.

The most vital aspect in dog potty training is to never punish your dog when it makes a mistake, this would have a negative impact on the dog and lead to different problems. The best way to teach your dog where to go eliminate is to show your dog you’re happy with treats and praises when it has gone and done its business where you want it to. This positive reinforcement will make the dog realize that if it eliminates in the designated area it is going to please you and will encourage your dog to want to go there once more next time.

Puppies need to eliminate constantly!. The most common times when a puppy needs to relieve itself are:

* After a short nap

* After waking up from a long sleep

* After eating, including small snacks

* After exercise or play time

It is recommended that you make a schedule for the times when you want to let your dog sleep and wake up, feed your dog its main meals and snacks, when you want to train, exercise or play with your dog, etc. Having a schedule is really helpful so as to predict when you are required to take your dog outdoors so that it can urinate or poop.

The dog potty training process will involve you deciding on a designated space outside where you will always take your dog out to on a leash. Usually about 5-10 minutes after the key times talked about above, your dog will probably need to eliminate. Be sure you take your dog outside to the selected place within this time frame and leave it alone throughout this time. Your dog will most likely have a sniff around on the ground and then begin pooping or peeing. After your dog is done show your dog with enthusiasm that you are happy with it for eliminating in the right area, a treat or some praise will do the trick. Continue to do this every time you have to take your dog outside to pee or poop.

Keep an eye out for these indicators that point out your dog must go to the toilet:

* Sniffing the ground

* Your dog is continually barking at you to get your attention

* Door scratching (particularly the door that leads out to the selected space)

* Running to you then running back to the door and continuing this over and over

In the event that you see your dog peeing or pooping in your home, don’t panic or make a big fuss, just take your dog outdoors so that it can finish off and continue with the dog potty training process. If on carrying your dog out and it is still peeing or pooping then it’s too late and the only thing you can do is clean up the mess and get rid of the odor with a deodorizer because dogs tend to poop or pee again in an area where they can smell the scent of their waste. A good idea is to clean up the mess and put some of it outside where your dog normally goes to relieve itself, this will let the dog know it’s the place it ought to go to eliminate.

Dog potty training tips for older dogs:

It may be a bit more of a challenge with regards to potty training an older dog however it is still very doable. Use the same principles and techniques used to toilet train a puppy to toilet train an older dog, it is going to have the same effect, you will just need to be more patient because it would take your matured dog a bit longer to learn and catch onto what you are trying to teach it. Make sure you keep training positive and be supportive of your dog. Dogs only wish to please their owners and at times they may do something that is seen as incorrect or bad in our eyes but they do not actually know that it’s seen as incorrect or bad behavior in our eyes. Dog potty training will definitely be successful for those who don’t give up and stay focused on the task. Your dog depends on you to teach it where it can and can’t go to poop or urinate, so it’s your responsibility to teach this to your dog.

Golden retriever puppy, three months old. (Dai...

Most dogs live indoors now and a dogs potty training is necessary.  This training can occur at any age, but the amount of time that it might take varies with the age of the puppy or dog.  For example, a puppy that you acquire at six weeks old could take a number of weeks to housebreak, one that is three months old should take less time and one that is six months old might learn in just a few days.  Whatever age your puppy/dog is, don’t forget that it is the owner’s duty to teach not to condemn.  A failure in a dogs potty training is most likely the owner’s fault.

It is best for one person in the household to be responsible for the dogs potty training because people could get confused as to whose job it is at what time.  This is not a spare time job, you must monitor the puppy/dog continually.  Prevention is the best cure when tackling your dogs potty training.  Observe effectively and note an anticipative look or running to the door and scratching at it.  This might be the time to take the dog/puppy outside.

To assist with the process of your dogs potty training, feed him/her on a fixed timetable and note what his or her habits are.  They most likely have a bowel movement soon after eating.  A significant fact to recall is that a puppy’s memory is about 30 seconds long, conseqently, if you are going to discipline him you must be fast.  Once again, prevention is a significant tool.  When you have to leave the dog alone or when you go to bed at night, the dog should be constrained to a small area that is covered in newspaper.  You can also “paper train”  by utilizing newspapers indoors.

When your dog/puppy urinates or messes on the floor or carpeting, wipe it up quickly and remove the cloth with the odor on it (take it out side).  When on a carpeting, clean the area with soap and water and then club soda (or with one of the specialty products formulated for this job).  There are some dogs who never seem to be potty trained, however, some of these may be because of training issues. It is possible, however, that there might be medical issues, conseqently, it might be beneficial to have your vet examine the dog.

Essentially you should feed your dog/puppy on a regular timetable, walk him/her consistently, observe effectively for indications that he/she has to go, wipe up messes and urine efficiently and correct the dog promptly.

DOGS POTTY TRAINING is a significant aspect of your relationship with your dog and it has to be done correctly. It is always best to receive guidance from a professional to make sure that you do not make any errors. There are training plans available for a minimal fee.

POTTY TRAINING/HOUSEBREAKING

You could let your puppy dog do his own thing, but that’s not a very good idea.
If you want to keep your home clean and smelling good it is time to get to work.

Let’s talk about some good potty training techniques so you can remain friends with your puppy dog.

Hmmm, potty training/housebreaking on paper …
Is this a good idea?
A lot of people like the idea of potty training their puppy dog in the house on paper. It seems like the easiest way to go (no pun intended).
Well, maybe it is, but there are drawbacks…

Although it is probably the most common way, in my opinion, it is not the ideal way to train your puppy dog.

First, there is the smell and who wants that in their home. The last thing your guests or friends want to do is smell the bad odor left behind by your precious puppy dog.

Second, when you potty train your puppy dog on paper, it can be a confusing transition. From being able to potty in the comfort of his house to having to go outside. What’s that all about?

The Better Way to Potty Train Your Puppy Dog
From experience, I have found a better approach to potty training your puppy dog…

1. Walk your puppy dog first thing in the morning, before anything else (even coffee). OK, you can take your coffee with you.
Heading to the bathroom is your first priority in the morning and it is his too.

2. Take him out after he eats or drinks anything. Don’t wait for the accident to happen.

3. If you play with your puppy dog in the house, take him outside when playtime is over. Playing for him is like exercising for us. Makes you wanna go! Right?

4. Watch your puppy dogs behavior throughout the day (if possible). You will learn the body language associated with him needing to go potty. When you notice him sniffing around and circling, it usually means he is looking for a place to go. Pick him up and get him outside immediately.

5. Take him out every 30 minutes to an hour during the day. If he doesn’t need to go potty, at least he will have the opportunity and it will get him used to going out. If he does potty, praise him a lot. Puppy dogs are happiest when they know you are pleased with them.

6. You shouldn’t leave your puppy dog in the house alone. Remember, they are like kids. If unattended they may do worse than soiling your floors. Who wants to come home to a mess.

7. Consider getting a pen of some kind for the yard. There will be times when you will not be able to watch him closely. In a pen he will be safe and secure. Make sure he has toys to play with and don’t leave him out there very long. Puppy dogs get their feelings hurt easily and may think they are being punished.

8. Try to feed your puppy dog at least 2 hours before bedtime. This way he will have time to digest his food. Right before bedtime, walk him or let him out. It is also a good idea to confine him in a crate or pen overnight. This will prevent any accidents or mischief while you are sleeping.

9. Never, I repeat, never rub your puppy dog’s nose in it and definitely do not yell at him. This will just humiliate him. And,yes, they do get embarrassed. Just pick him up and take him outside. While he is outside, clean up the mess and use something that will take away the smell so he doesn’t return to the same place.

What is the first and probably the biggest problem that most dog owners encounter?  A dogs potty training.  How are you supposed to go about doing this type of training properly?  First, don’t learn by trial and error, there are methods that will work.  In fact there are a lot of different opinions about the best way to accomplish this project, but there are some general techniques that will help you.

Dogs learn by being corrected for undesirable behavior and rewarded for desirable behavior.  This technique can be used in a dogs potty training just as it is in training other behaviors.  As you work with your dog consistently, the dog will learn the desired behavior.  What a relief it will be when your dog is potty trained, whether you are training your dog to go outside or at a designated area inside.

Younger puppies are harder to train than older puppies and dogs.  This is mostly because as a puppy grows, its muscles for bladder control develop and it can go much longer before it has to eliminate.  Remember that you must work at the training, you must supervise the dog constantly and be very consistent.  In other words, watch your dog or puppy’s habits and figure out when it might need to go potty and give the same response every time.

What if he urinates or messes inside?  Make sure you clean it up really well.  There are products that you can purchase that will help with this task.  One of the most important aspects of dogs potty training is to make sure that they do not have the scent of the last place that they went.  Make sure that you take the cleaning rags outside.

When your dog goes outside or in the designated spot, praise him lavishly.  Let the dog really know that you are pleased.  After all one of the biggest desires that your dog has is to please you, its master.  This relates to the technique for teaching: by praising the dog you are reinforcing an acceptable behavior so that your dog will know that this is a good way to act.  Of course you can let your dog know when you are not pleased as well.  A stern face and curt tone in your voice are usually enough for this.

Dogs potty training is similar to training other behaviors, you use the same techniques, reward and correct.  Remember to be more patient the younger your puppy is as they need to develop the muscles that are necessary for them to “hold it”.  You must be vigilant and consistent in the potty training process.  Watch to see what your dog’s habits are and remember that they will have to go in about 15 to 30 minutes after eating.  Important fact – clean the urine and messes up carefully and take the rags outside.  These are some of the basic techniques for a dogs potty training and they should get you started with the process.
